The Milch Collection
A unique examination of the medals, badges, documents etc. belonging to Luftwaffe Generalfeldmarschall Erhard Milch, an important member of the ‘second tier’ Nazi hierarchy. The group represents an unusual collection of original material, with a provenance tied directly to an important and senior ranking Luftwaffe officer. (1)
Fiesler Fi 103R Restoration
We spotlight the detailed restoration of a Fiesler Fi 103R Reichenberg piloted ‘V1 Flying Bomb’ by a UK museum. This ambitious project saw this unusual and extremely rare exhibit brought up to a superb display level from what was a near hulk-like state after carefully detailed and quality work undertaken by a specialist team of craftsmen. The Limiting Factor
Germany lagged far behind the Allies during the First World War in terms of both the output and efficiency of its aero engines, albeit that those engines that it did produce were very reliable for their time. We look at how Germany’s circumstances and struggling economy influenced its aero engine design policy and actual production output. (3)
Lost to Mines
During WW2, the Royal Navy laid many anti-u-boat minefields around Britain and Ireland, it later being estimated that these accounted for just three U-boats destroyed. Debate followed as to whether the effort was worthwhile, but the number of U-boat wrecks since found in these minefields shows they were more successful than had been believed in 1945. (4)
Myths of Stalingrad
Historian Christer Bergstrom takes us through some of the myths and misunderstandings that have grown up since the Second World War around the desperate and bloody struggle for Stalingrad - myths that have been strengthened and amplified by myriad post-war memoirs written by German officers and servicemen who served on the Eastern Front.
