FORT AMHERST

Kent Life - - Town Life: Chatham And Gillingham -

A Napoleonic fort built in 1759 to protect the dockyard and the River Medway from invasion, Fort Amherst is now a visitor attraction. Built on top of original chalk caves, these were extended to provide a labyrinth of tunnels, stores and defensive positions. Today you can take guided tours of the tunnels, attend spooky events or even get married in a candlelit cavern.
