Vase success despite late drama

-

Cranbrook faced a nervous final few seconds before they were crowned Kent Vase champions in Ashford.

They led Old Williamsonians 2826 before the Rochester side had a chance to win the clash with a penalty with the last kick of the game.

The kick missed and ensured the Alex Cornwallis-captained Cranbrook finished the season on a high last weekend.

Old Williamsonians led 15-9 at halftime with Hylton Gibson scoring all of Cranbrook’s points through penalties.

Gibson added another penalty after the break to reduce the deficit before Old Williamsonians scored a try to stretch their lead to 20-12.

The sides then traded penalties before Sam Depoel-Wood scored under the posts to get Cranbrook within a point.

Some more ill-discipline saw Cranbrook trail by four points before Gibson slotted two more penalties to put his side 28-26 ahead.

Old Williamsonians then had an opportunity to win the final with the last kick of the match but the attempt sailed across the face of the posts and into the arms of Gibson who kicked it into touch to end the match.
