Kent Messenger Maidstone

This month’s weather will be...

-

Kent’s amateur weather man, Lester Gosbee, takes a monthly look at what could be in store for us. July will start with the high pressure that has dominated much of June’s weather. If you are expecting a third outstanding July in a row, I feel you may be disappointed. Having said that, I do think that we will all have good spells of summery weather to enjoy at times. Last summer’s highest temperature was 32.3C (90.1F) at Gravesend on July 18. I do not expect 90F temperatures this July, Wimbledon will be in full flow after a warm, and sometimes humid start with temperatures in the mid 20sC, up to 25C (77F). Cooler air on a weak low pressure system could set off a few thundery showers. Between July 5 to 10, it will often be breezy from a northerly direction. The South East will see very few showers, but will have temperatures of 19-21C (66-70F), a little below par for July. High pressure will return around the 11th, bringing us all some warm sunny weather from the Azores on a southerly breeze. Temperatures should reach 28C (82F). High pressure will not be stationary, which happened all too often in June. It will move north, allowing air to come in on an easterly wind. Around St Swithen’s Day on July 15, temperatures will be around 25-28C (77-82F) inland but could be much cooler at the coast. It will be more cloudy and less settled from the 23rd, with spells of rain. It will be cool at 18-20C (64-68F). This spell will last for around a week. High pressure will return for a fine end to the month with temperatures a little above normal.
