Disability footballers raise the bar

-

Autism, ADHD, cerebral palsy, restricted vision – none of these conditions are a bar to playing good football, as a disability football tournament at Maidstone’s Gallagher Stadium proved. Several hundred supporters turned up on Sunday to cheer on 36 teams of 10 playing in a six-a-side competition structured into five leagues of varying ability levels. Organiser Lorraine Humm, the welfare officer and head of disability football at Maidstone United, said: “We had people with just about every kind of disability apart from wheelchair-users and saw some great matches.” and Rodney Divall has been reelected as vice-chairman for the coming year. All committee and working groups remain largely unchanged. The parish council remains opposed to the planning application promoted by MBC on the Heathfield site. Consideration was being given as to what action could be taken to register the community’s disquiet with the way the case has been handled. The outcome of legal advice being sought by MBC in respect of the Coxheath Neighbourhood Plan was still awaited. The annual accounts and governance statement for 2014/15 have been approved and the relevant documentation has been submitted to the external auditors. The next meeting will be on Tuesday, June 30 in the village hall small hall at 7.30pm. The public are invited to attend and individuals may speak for up to three minutes at the discretion of the chairman, before the start of the meeting. The Anchorians team from Gillingham walked off with the trophy for the Premier League, but Maidstone United came second and also won some of the other leagues. The tournament was sponsored by the Civil Services Insurance Society. Maidstone United FC Raiders have eight adult and five junior disability teams, making them the biggest disability club in the county.
