Morris talking promotion

Gillingham

- By Luke Cawdell

Gillingham keeper Glenn Morris believes promotion has to be the aim next season.

A mid-table finish and a positive end to the 2014/15 season has filled everyone with confidence for the new campaign.

Morris knows League 1 will be tough but sees no point in settling for mediocrity.

He said: “Finishing 12th might add expectations on us but we know what the squad is capable of.

“We didn’t get off to the best of starts last season and know if we can start well and play how we can do, then we can definitely finish higher than 12th.

“The play-offs aren’t out of reach and if we don’t aim as high as possible, then what are we doing? There is no point even trying. I am sure promotion will definitely be the aim.”

Morris is determined to make an immediate impression when Gillingham return to training on Wednesday.

The goalkeeper won the shirt from Stuart Nelson last season and now wants to keep his role as the club’s No.1.

“I want to stake a claim, work hard and try and get in the team,” said the 31-yearold.

“You can’t second-guess anyone and you don’t know what will happen but you have to put the effort in, try and perform when you get a chance in preseason and get into the team. That’s all I can do.”

Morris is likely to face a new challenge for the goalkeeping jersey this season, with Nelson seemingly on his way out. He said: “Whoever comes in, or whoever is there, you have to push and if you perform well, you get a chance.”

Morris recently signed a new one-year deal at the Gills.

He started last season second choice to Nelson but ended as Edinburgh’s first pick, with 12 appearances.

He said: “I didn’t have to think long and hard about a new deal.It was pretty straight forward.

“I am excited to still be involved in a club like Gillingham in League 1. It is another challenge.

“It’s a different situation for me going into it this year from last.

“I think I’ve shown a lot of people what I can do and sometimes that puts a bit of pressure on to keep that going.”
