RIBBONWALK
Celeb Denise in charity trek
Pink was definitely the colour of the day when more than 600 people flocked to Leeds Castle on Saturday to take part in an annual cha rity hike.
Breast Cancer Care’s Pink Ribbonwalk, which is now in its third year at the site, saw groups of women, men, children and even a few four legged friends heading off on three separate treks around the castle’s beautiful grounds.
They were joined by actress, presenter and charity ambassador Denise Van Outen, who set off at 12.45pm on the fivemile walk following an impassioned speech to a large crowd.
The first group set off on the longest hike, 20 miles, at 9am, with the second departing on a shorter, 10-mile circuit at 11.30am.
Speaking before her event Ms Van Outen, of Tenterden, said: “I’ve been involved in the charity for a few years since I lost my grandmother to cancer. I did my first walk about four or five years ago.
“I’ve done three in this country but I have also done a lot abroad.
“These walks are really important as they bring women together on a local level who can share stories and support each other.”
The 41-year-old added: “It’s such a brilliant charity, especially as the statistics rise.
“It offers a fantastic support network and any donation, however large or small, is greatly appreciated.”
Everyone who took part was given a pink ribbon to carry, on which they wrote a message of support or a personal experience, with more than 15,000 previously completed banners flanking the start line.
In 11 years the charity’s ribbonwalks, which take place across the country and this year include six events, have attracted 30,000 participants and raised £9.7 million.
