Stroke victim’s river swim challenge
After suffering a stroke two years ago, a 57-year-old man swam nine miles of the Medway for charity.
Pete MacNamara completed the feat over Saturday and Sunday to raise money for Nordoff Robbins, a charity supported by the Twyford Bridge Marina in Yalding.
The charity uses music to transform the lives of vulnerable people across the UK living with a range of conditions affecting their mental wellbeing.
This year the marina has been holding several events to reach its target of £2,000 which will ensure they can enter the Dragon Boat race at Bewl Water this weekend.
Mr MacNamara, from south London, completed the challenge half-an-hour quicker than expected, just under nine hours over the two days.
He said: “Two years ago I had a stroke and having got the all clear from my GP I’m hoping to raise a stack of cash and even bigger support.
“This has taken a lot of organisation, and I would like to thank all the people involved in helping me to make this happen.”
Mr MacNamara, who has a boat at the marina, arrived at the public moorings in Maidstone at about 2.30pm on Sunday, to cheers. He has raised about £1,100 for the charity.
