Violence erupted on a night out in Maidstone leaving two men injured.

One man was punched to the ground and another reportedly had a road sign thrown at him as the pair walked down Week Street.

The incident took place at around 3.50am on Saturday.

Week Street was almost entirely taped off for around six hours as investigations took place – with the cordon running from HSBC on High Street up to Tesco Express.

One of the victims, a 50-year-old man, was punched and fell hitting his head on the floor.

He suffered a serious head injury and was taken to Tunbridge Wells Hospital at Pembury.

The second victim, a 25-year-old man, was also injured after it was reported he was assaulted with a road sign, later taken away from the scene by forensics teams. He had head and back injuries, which were not thought to be serious, and he was not taken to hospital.

The victims were walking together in the direction of High Street.

Police, forensics teams and paramedics attended and pas- sersby reported seeing a man on the floor covered by a sheet.

Police remained around the town after the street reopened, shortly after 10am.

They released an appeal for witnesses and issued descriptions of two men who were wearing dark clothing and aged around 17 or 18, who they wanted to speak to.

One man was arrested over the weekend, but later released without charge.

Two teens were arrested on suspicion of assault the following day.

The pair, both 18 and from Sittingbourne, have been bailed until October 6.

It’s the second time since June businesses on Week Street were forced to keep their doors closed due to an incident overnight.

The earlier incident was the arson attack on The Works book store.
