MPE pitch perfect with a boost of girl power

MPE Sports under-9s have struck the perfect balance. They won the Spring Trophy and finished runners-up in the Challenge Trophy last season. They’ve just made the step up from five-a-side to seven-a-side football in the Invicta Primary League, hosting Larkfield Juniors in their first game of the season at Madginford School. Enjoyment is the name of the game and, while winning isn’t everything, last year’s success has left MPE hungry for more. Manager Dennis Sinnott said: “Hopefully we’ll pick up more trophies but it’s grassroots football and the main thing is that everyone enjoys themselves and develops. “Winning games is an added bonus but you can still play a good game and lose. That’s football. “It’s all about getting the balance right to keep the enjoyment there and trying to teach them.” MPE, who are sponsored by the nearby Marriott Tudor Park Hotel and printing firm Conquest Litho, have three girls in their squad of 10 players. It’s the most of any MPE side, a fact Sinnott is proud of. He said: “It works well having the girls in the team. “They don’t want to play for a girlsonly team – they like going up against the boys. “Other MPE teams have one or two girls but we have the most.” Loose Lions Rovers under-13s seek Year 7 and 8 players, preferably defenders, to strengthen their squad. Anyone interested should contact manager Mick Pye on 07742 512093 or e-mail: mick.lionsrovers@ yahoo.co.uk Maidstone Minor League side Vinters Green under-18s need a goalkeeper. They play in the Maidstone Minor League. Contact Kevin Seward on 07757 696925.
