Kent Messenger Maidstone

Title push in perfect shape

-

A perfect league season is still on the cards for Maidstone United under-15s.

The team have won all 11 games and are 15 points clear at the top of the Kent Youth League, Central Division, after beating Tunbridge Wells 2-1 on Sunday.

Owen Matthews got on the end of a corner and Bivesh Gurung found the top corner from 20 yards before a late goal from Wells.

United finished runners-up last season and are determined to go one better.

Manager Steve Pritchard said: “I set them a target of winning the league and it’s going pretty well.

“We’re playing well all over the park and we’ve deserved the wins.

“We brought in five or six players, added power and pace in midfield and a couple of defenders.

“It’s not out of the question to win all 20 games but teams are raising their game against us.

“Playing Maidstone at the Gallagher Stadium, we’re everyone’s cup final and it does make it difficult. “It would be nice to win every game but as long as we win the league I’m not worried about going unbeaten.”

The goals of Ike Bignell, who’s training with Gillingham and Ollie Hill have fired Maidstone to the top of the table.

They also have the Kent County Cup in their sights, with a quarter-final at Hollands & Blair to look forward to on Sunday week. Stones have a score to settle. Pritchard, who’s in his second season in charge, said: “We played Hollands & Blair in the final last year and they stuffed us 7-2, so we owe them one.

“We’re a lot stronger this year, so hopefully we’ll get a bit of revenge.”
