Bears, given a guard of honour by the visitors, raced into a 4- 0 lead courtesy of goals from Michael Holliday corners.
Athletic fought back in the second half but Bears held on before captain Rob Lyall collected the league trophy.
Holliday corners set up headers for Jack West (2) and Andy Hart and then an Ashley Russell strike.
Sutton were more positive after the break but had keeper Dean James to thank for denying Russell and Hart.
The visitors replied with a Chris Mirrless penalty, added a second through Aiden Pursglove and scored a late third when Ben Williams struck following a free-kick. They followed that with a 1- 0 home win over Sutton Athletic on Monday, Gabriel Luckhurst with the only goal in their final game before a name change to K Sports.
Boss Kris Browning said: “It’s been an unbelievable first season in the league.
“I’d have taken sixth place all day long, especially when we were fourth-bottom in October. I believe it’s the highest the club’s ever been.”
