All is eerily quiet on Bridges front

-

Political editor Supplements editor Business editor With some relief we note there have been no apparent traffic problems to contend with so far as a result of the road works at the Bridges gyratory scheme.

Indeed Monday was eerily quiet, according to my drivers, probably assisted by some schools seemingly having an extra day’s half-term holiday.

We expect that later phases of the work will be more difficult – but with the bulk of the big jobs taking place during the school summer holidays, hopefully peak-time traffic will stay moving. The British never understand what they are doing until it is done and passed.

Our only concern seems to be how it affects us, the British.

Although this is important we must ask ‘what is our responsibility to our European Community?’.

This, in the long run, may be of much more importance. The future is a long view. Elizabeth Birmingham Cherry Garden Road, Canterbury
