Kent Messenger Maidstone

Seven-goal loan spell

with Hastings, said: “It was a strange game to come back into.

“Bromley’s my old club as well but it’s good to be back. I was looking forward to getting back and was pleased to get on, although the result didn’t go our way.

“The boys have done well so far and if you’d said at the start of the season we’d be where we are and picking up the points we have, everyone would have taken that.”

May broke the 25-goal barrier when Maidstone won the Ryman League two years ago.

He also led the way in National League South, scoring 13 goals.

He’s setting no goal targets in the National League but, based on the Bromley match, the big targetman hopes the physical side of his game will be allowed to flourish.

He said: “To be honest, I’ve not seen loads of the games.

“I watched Wrexham here and I thought we were good and I watched the first game here against York City and again I thought we did enough to get the result but ended up drawing.

“Bromley was the first game I’ve played in and I thought the referee was pretty good. He let it flow.

“I don’t know at the minute what it will be like but it’s probably more physical anyway so you probably do get away with a little bit more. As for goals, who knows? I wouldn’t like to set a target.

“It’s the first time I’ve played at this level, it’s territory I don’t know really.

“I’ll just be happy to be involved and be part of the squad.”

May enjoyed his time at Hastings but was itching to return.

He said: “I played one 45 and one half-hour in pre-season for Maidstone and pulled my calf.

“I hadn’t trained at all and then became fit pretty much as the season started but obviously wasn’t match fit.

“With us at the moment there’s no means for me to get games so Jay said about going out on loan and would I be happy to do that?

“I managed to get a few goals at Hastings.

“It was nice to get back scoring and playing a run of games and getting match fit.

“I wouldn’t say it was easier in Ryman South. It’s slightly different. No disrespect but the pitches aren’t quite as good and you know you’ve dropped down a level but Hastings are a good side and you’ve got good players around you.

“I was just happy they created chances and luckily enough I scored a few.

“It was good to see all the Maidstone old boys from last year and the year before.

“That wasn’t the sole reason I went there but I knew they had good players.”
