Boss bemoans lack of consistency
Jay Saunders described Maidstone’s start at Bromley as horrendous. Stones trailed inside 20 seconds on Saturday when a throw-in gave Dave Martin the chance to cross for Adam Cunnington. They rarely looked like getting back into the game and were put out of their misery in the second half when another cross, this time from Blair Turgott, was met by George Porter. Stones fell way short of the standards set in the 2-1 win over Eastleigh on Tuesday night – not helped by that opening goal. Manager Saunders said: “It’s the story of us this season – no consistency again. “I just said to the lads in there I feel like a scratched record but it’s the same thing every week. We put in a good performance against Eastleigh then come here and today, in both boxes, we weren’t strong enough. “It’s a horrendous start, isn’t it? Let’s be honest, to go 1- 0 down at this level is killing yourself. “We huffed and puffed for the rest of the first half but they looked more dangerous than us in the final third and they were probably more solid than us in the final third. “It was a bit of a battle, there weren’t loads and loads of football played but the pitch dictated that a little bit.” Stones remain 18th in the National League, five points clear of the relegation zone and the search for consistency goes on. Saunders said: “In previous years we’d go out and I’d know that even if we didn’t play well we would be OK and we could hold on for results, or I knew what I was going to get nine times out of 10 out of my side and, at the moment, I don’t. “That’s why I didn’t get too excited Tuesday night because we’re not consistent and until we get that, it’s going to be a struggle.”
