Vibe gets Pigott buzzing

- By Craig Tucker

Joe Pigott felt like he was back in the Football League on Tuesday night.

It was quite a match for the on-loan Cambridge striker, who scored a stunning opener and had a second bizarrely chalked off as Maidstone won at Dagenham.

The quality on show and the atmosphere generated by almost 400 away fans made it more like a League match for Pigott.

He said: “What a massive result for us and it continues our good run.

“Dagenham are sitting second and some people would have thought it was a big ask for us to come here and get three points.

“It was like a Football League game but the teams towards the top of the table aren’t really Conference sides.

“The quality they’ve got is League 2 and Dagenham have been in the league for so many years and they’ve still got the majority of the players that have been here over the last few years.”

Pigott gave United a dream start with his sixth-minute opener, a marvellous effort from outside the area.

He said: “Something in my mind told me instinctively to hit it and it went in the top corner.”

His disallowed goal was a big talking point, initially awarded by referee Samuel Allison, who then changed his mind with the ball back in the centrecircle.

Keeper clearance Mark Cousins’ hit Pigott as he turned away but the linesman decided there had been a foul.

Pigott said: “It was a strange one. The thing is I wasn’t trying to stop the ball. I’d turned my back and was walking away and he’s hit me, so how it’s been disallowed I don’t know.

“The ref didn’t see it, it’s all down to the linesman. I don’t think he really saw what was going on, either.

“He thought I stuck my leg out to stop him but that wasn’t the case. I was disappointed with that but then when we scored the second one, it was pure relief to have that two-goal cushion.”
