Madcap magic as characters come to life
Children had a fantastic time when they went to school as Harry Potter and his chums, wore pyjamas, or sat down to a dose of George’s Marvellous Med Medicine punch. It was part of World Book Day, the annual celebration of read reading, which fell on Thursday, March 2, but many schools focused on the magic of litera literature for the week. At New Line Learning Acad Academy, staff and students enjoyed a spelling bee, book-themed quizzes, and a book swap. A Roald Dahl-inspired menu was served with students tucking in to Fantastic Mr Fox fries, Charlie And The Chocolate Fac Factory fudge cake, and George’s Marvellous Medicine punch. Younger children at Little Learners Nursery and Tiger Primary School dressed in their pyja pyjamas. The Boughton Lane primary also made potatoes into their favourite characters, with Bat Batman, Harry Potter and Aslan all making an appearance. Harry Potter was a firm favour favour- ite, with Harrys, Hermiones and Rons clearly taking a day off from class at Hogwarts.
There were also a few escapees from Azkaban, with Sirius Black and Bellatrix Lestrange managing to sneak in for the celebrations.
Sandling Primary School chose a theme called Looking After Penny, with every child sponsored 1p to show how small amounts of cash soon mount up.
A story was created featuring a little girl called Penny, and pupils wrote short stories taking her around the world.
These will be combined into a Sandling School Book and any funds raised will be added to Readathon.
Ulcombe Primary School took fancy dress very seriously, with children parading their costumes before welcoming guest author Tola Okugwo to speak about her book series Daddy Do My Hair?
Miss Okugwo also visited Kingswood and Aylesford primaries, while Ann Bryant, author of books including The Lost Broomstick and Dragons vs Dinos, headed to Loose Primary.
Lotte Moore, creator of Lotte’s War, talked to pupils at Leeds and Broomfield Primary, Tree Tops Academy and Sutton Valence Primary.
