Stones eyeing treble after comeback win

we needed a goal to get back in the game.

“That put them on the back foot a bit and set us up perfectly for the second half to get at them. We knew they were a bit nervous, with the fans a bit nervy as well, so we took advantage of that.

“We got back into the game in a great manner, so we’re all buzzing. It feels like more than three points but it is only three points.

“We can’t get too carried away because there’s still a lot of work to do.” A last-minute penalty saw Maidstone ladies complete the second leg of the treble. Nicola Morris scored from the spot as Stones beat Kent Football United 3-2 in the Kent Women’s Plate final at the Gallagher on Sunday. Jess Flisher, cousin of Stones forward Alex, opened the scoring but United were 2-1 down with 10 minutes left. Amanda Beeput’s cool finish made it 2-2, followed by the winner from Morris. Stones celebrated as captain Abigail Spragg lifted the trophy, while goalkeeper Kay Doody was named player-of-thematch. They’ve already won Kent Division 1 and need to beat the University of Kent in the League Cup final on May 18 to complete the treble. Maidstone: Kay Doody, Emma Cahill, Abigail Spragg, Rachel Brewer, Megan Gill, Gemma Sullivan, Lucy Harrington, Jessica Flisher, Adrienne Kemp, Nicola Morris, Natalie Stacey. Subs: Amanda Beeput, Laura Lapetzidis, Rosie Hague, Helen Marsh, Emma Harrington. Jay Saunders enjoyed the moment as Maidstone won from two goals down at Woking – then stressed the need for calm. Celebrations in the dugout matched those on the terraces as Maidstone stunned their drop rivals to make it seven games unbeaten. But manager Saunders quickly turned his attention to the bigger picture with Saturday’s home game against Barrow followed by long trips to Gateshead, Macclesfield and Wrexham. He said: “I don’t want to get carried away and the boys won’t get carried away. “I’ll make sure of that because you look at the run we’ve got coming up and they’re tough games. “What we’ve done is made the job a little bit easier and given ourselves a better chance of staying in the league. “But you go and lose your next few games and you’re back in a lot of trouble, so we’ve just got to concentrate on Barrow and after that, we’ll worry about the travelling games.” Former Stones loanee Delano Sam-Yorke scored the goal Saunders predicted – replays showed it was onside – and Jamie Lucas made it two before Loza triggered the fightback. Saunders said: “Jam’s been good of late. He had a little spell out of the team and it was difficult for him but he’s shown the reaction you want as a manager. “That’s seven unbeaten now and I’ve been saying we’ve shown that mental toughness that we didn’t have earlier in the season. We’d go 2- 0 down and that was game over.”
