United have gone from the bottom of the form guide to the top after a seven-match unbeaten run.

They’re three points clear of the National League bottom four going into the home match against play-off contenders Barrow on Saturday (3pm) and also have two games in hand on their relegation rivals.

Saunders said: “It’s nice to be top of the form table but it doesn’t mean a lot. We’ve just got to keep plugging away in these last eight games and get a couple more wins as soon as possible.

“You don’t know exactly what you need but I think two more wins and we won’t be far off.

“That gets us to 50 points and then you’re roughly there but it’s a strange league this year.

“We’d be unlucky to go down after the run we’ve been on but we went eight without a win earlier in the season and your form can just as easily turn.”

Saunders credits Maidstone’s loan players for the turnaround.

Not only have the likes of Stuart Lewis, Reece Prestedge and Joe Pigott transformed results, they’ve also had a big impact in the dressing room.

Saunders said: “You always stick to your beliefs and what you think is right as a manager but better-quality players make a difference.

“No disrespect to the lads we had but we’ve got better players. We needed more experience, too.

“You get a feeling when players have given up and earlier in the season I’d go into the dressing room at half-time thinking no matter what I said, it was almost a lost cause.

“It’s the first time I’ve had that as a manager and it wasn’t nice, doubting whether you could get a response where confidence was so low.

“Now I go in at half-time and we’ve got cool heads in there. You’re talking and you can see the boys are taking it on board.”

Maidstone are likely to be unchanged against a team who beat them 3- 0 last October.

Saunders said: “They’re having a good season and are up there around the play-offs but I’d like to think if we can deal with them defensively, we’ll be able to cause problems.”
