– and repairs leave unsightly mess

However, sometimes the granite blocks appear to have been taken away and any old rubbish left over in the back of the lorry substituted in their place; usually asphalt but sometimes concrete paving slabs are used as a quick and easy (and cheap) replacement. This is starting to produce an unsightly mess.
Surely it is not beyond the abilities of the borough council to police this work and hold the perpetrators to account? Or, in perhaps five or 10 years, can we expect council taxpayers to be told to expect a very large bill for remedial work?
I recently heard a visitor from Tonbridge remark: “Isn’t Maidstone ugly?” Allowing our town centre to deteriorate in such a needless way hardly enhances our image as far as visitors are concerned. Further to your article on March 23 (£8.9m to ease traffic woe), this only goes to highlight the mess our local councils are making in allowing all the commercial and private development in mid Kent.
The recently published letters in this paper of my troubles in getting across Maidstone to KIMS Hospital have shown that to all and sundry, while this article reminds us of the waste of effort proposed at both ends of Willington Street.
Without a dual carriageway on Lord Romney Hill, the Ashford Road, New Cut and the Bearsted What’s On reporter KoL editor Road to Junction 7 of the M20, Willington Street will always be a road to avoid. Brian Richardson East Farleigh
