Manager Jay Saunders feels Maidstone will have a good idea where they stand after a gruelling run of away games. United chalk up 1,700 miles over the next week in their pursuit of National League safety. They travel by train to the North East to take on Gateshead on Saturday. That’s followed by overnight stays for games at Macclesfield on Tuesday and Wrexham on Good Friday. Saunders’ side are four points clear of the relegation zone and also have two games in hand on the sides around them. He said: “By Wrexham we’ll know roughly what we’ve got to do to stay up and certainly after Boreham Wood on Easter Monday. “We’ve had a good month and a bit but no game is easy. “If I’d said after we lost to Aldershot that we’d go the next eight unbeaten, everyone would have laughed at me. “We’ve got to 47 points and given ourselves a good chance to stay in the league. “The supporters believe we can do it and everyone around the club believes it. “A month ago I don’t think people were expecting us to stay in the league but we knows things can change quickly again.” United may have to use their squad over the next week but Saunders is reluctant to change a winning side. He said: “We could go to Gateshead and pick up a couple of injuries. You just don’t know, so it’s hard to plan. “It’s true that if you’re not having the best time then people look leggy but you don’t feel tired when you’re on a good run. “If you look at the way we’ve been finishing games, we’ve looked fitter than a lot of the teams we’ve played.”
