M&M enjoy opening victory
Newly-promoted Medway & Maidstone won their first match in Division 2 East of the Southern Athletics League on Saturday.
In the men’s track events, Lewis Heffernan won the 400m hurdles A race in 58.4 seconds and Lewis Cable took out the B race in 65.3.
Over 400m, Reece Dimech (50.9) won the A race and George Clements (52.9) did likewise in the B race.
Jake Berry clocked 4.07 to win the A 1,500m by a clear margin while Simon Habtom won the B race in 4.26.2.
A time of 15.54 was enough for Tom Collins to win the 5k B race and Habtom (6.53.9) claimed his second win in the 2,000m steeplechase.
In the 110m hurdles, Andrejs Safars took out the B race in 19.4 and the club also tasted victory in the 4x400m relay with a winning time of 3.26.6.
Medway & Maidstone took maximum points in the men’s hammer, Safars (29.50m) and Clive Thomson (24.86) winning the A and B events respectively.
Result of the day came in the javelin with a magnificent throw of 59.96m by Sonny Nash winning the A event. Nash broke his own club under-20 record by more than four metres and is now ranked second in the UK.
In the ladies competition, Darcey Kuypers won the 100m A in 12.7 and doubled up to win the 200m A in 26.0.
Ellie Turner won the 200m B in 25.5 while over 400m, Elle Wastell won the A race in 60.8.
There was more 4x400m relay success with the ladies team winning convincingly.
Good results followed in the ladies field events, with Mayong Tabe (5.43m) and Lucy Hope (4.20m) victorious in the A and B events respectively.
Ashleigh West cleared 1.70m to win the high jump A and Medway & Maidstone now focus on their next match in Kings Lynn on May 21.
