Worgan proves handy again

WREXHAM

-

It was fitting that another Lee Worgan penalty save should help keep Maidstone in the National League.

Stones were 2-1 up on Good Friday when Wrexham were awarded a 63rd-minute penalty following Magnus Okuonghae’s collision with Ntumba Massanka.

An equaliser there and the effects of a gruelling week on the road may just have taken their toll.

But Worgan, whose penalty save in the play-off final at Ebbsfleet clinched promotion, made a superb stop from Anthony Barry and pushed the loose ball away.

Stones boss Jay Saunders said: “I said to him if that’s the result that keeps us in this league it will be a fitting way, really, that we came up because of his penalty save and maybe stayed up because of it.

“It was a big turning point. At that stage, 2-2 away from home then tiredness creeps in but he’s pulled off a great save and we’ve gone on and got the third.”

Stones trailed but Joe Pigott and Jamar Loza gave them a 2-1 lead before Alex Flisher was rewarded with his first goal since October.

Wrexham played some nice football and took the lead after only nine minutes with a towering header by Jordan White from a right-wing cross.

Maidstone grew into the game, themselves looking bright on the ball, with Reece Prestedge pulling the strings.

The visitors were enjoying a decent spell and equalised on 30 minutes.

Flisher forced a mistake in the Wrexham defence, simply by not giving up, and laid on a tap-in for Pigott at the far post.

Maidstone took the lead in the 52nd minute.

Wrexham, expecting a Flisher long throw, were caught out when he went short to Loza, who beat two defenders and fired past Shwan Jalal at the near post.

The penalty miss was Barry’s first touch after coming on and from his second he missed an open goal after a Worgan clearance fell to him.

Flisher got the goal he deserved as Maidstone made it 3-1 with seven minutes left, Wrexham gifting him a simple header from Jack Paxman’s corner. Maidstone: Worgan, Twumasi, Mills, Okuonghae, Lokko, Paxman (McCarthy 88mins), Prestedge, Flisher, Odubade (Taylor 78mins), Pigott, Loza (Phipps 84mins). Subs not used: Coyle, BridleCard. Attendance: 3,379 (176 Stones fans).
