Teeing off in aid of school

Alumni and locals came together to support a grammar school’s parents’ associatio­n at a charity golf day. Maidstone Grammar School Parents’ Associatio­n (MGSPA) organised the event at Kings Hill Golf Club, which raised £1,400 to be spent on equipping facilities created through ongoing building work at the school.

Andrew Wishart, who has a son in Year Eight, won the competitio­n with his team, and former pupil Sam Prideaux achieved the best gross score over 18 holes, with a score of 76.

In addition to brilliant weather throughout play, entrants also enjoyed a three-course meal in the evening, as well as an auction and raffle.

MGSPA’s next fundraiser will be held next Thursday at the Barton Road grammar. Steve Davis, six-time world snooker champion, will play six frames of snooker and talk to the audience about his life and career, as well as the sport that made him. Tickets cost £25, and include a finger buffet. toys. All are welcome. This is a great opportunit­y for new families to see the kindergart­en. Go along to 9 Gatland Lane, phone 01622 205914. Church events: On Saturday and Sunday May 20-21, a cream tea event will be held at St Margaret’s Church from 2-4.30pm. Entry is free but remember to take money for stalls such as raffles, plant sales and tombola. There will be free games for the young and young at heart! St Andrew’s Church will be holding the Mothers’ Union meeting on Thursday May 18 from 7.45pm. Marlene Parks will be talking about toilets. Action group Barming Green Fields has shared informatio­n received from residents regarding potential developmen­t on the Pea Fields site behind Broomshaw Road. Residents have had representa­tives from Taylor Wimpey knocking on their doors asking if the owners would be willing to sell their house for an access road to the proposed site. Taylor Wimpey has since sent a letter to North Street residents to say that it is doing archeologi­cal investigat­ive trenching works and that this is not the company starting to build houses. It will remain closed until Tuesday June 13. Madginford Library will continue to have extended opening hours during this time. PARISH COUNCIL: Following the AGM, Richard Camp has been elected as chairman of the council with Paul Young as his vicechairm­an. Plant and cake sale: The Guides are holding a plant and cake sale on Saturday, May 20 from 10am-noon at their premises on the Church Landway. Do pop along and grab yourself a bargain. Cricket club fixtures: This weekend the 1st XI entertain Four Elms on Saturday while the 2nd XI travel to Hadlow. On Sunday, the team start their league campaign with a trip to Frindsbury. Also on Sunday, the club host a Chairmans XI v NHS match. Helping children overcome their fear of dogs (also adults), sessions are held at Kingswood Village Hall on Mondays at 5pm, (except Bank Holidays). For details contact Janet Tandy on 01622 842209. The PCSO was unable to attend but sent notice of one crime that had been reported during the last month, which was a burglary in Brishing Road. The structure of committees remained as before with Cllr Forknall chairing planning and May songs/celebratio­ns: On Saturday May 20 at 7.30pm, a concert called May Songs and Celebratio­ns takes place in St Peter & St Paul’s church in Yalding. The Chancel Singers and friends will be singing folk songs, canticles, madrigals and anthems, directed by Christophe­r Harris. Wine, soft drinks and nibbles will be available during the interval. Tickets, available on the door, cost £10 each, with proceeds going to School Gambia. School holiday: After a busy term with SATs testing, a residentia­l visit and Bikeabilit­y for the older children, term ends on Friday, May 26 for one week. As Monday, June 5 is a staff developmen­t day, the children will not return to school until Tuesday, June 6. WI news: When it met last week, Yalding and District WI made two resolution­s to put to the national conference. The first to alleviate loneliness by working with other organisati­ons and services, and the second ‘plastic soup’ which calls on the government and industry keep micro plastic fibres out of the oceans. The meeting ended with a great hour of musical theatre songs from Cheryl King. Marden walkers: On Saturday, May 20, the walkers are holding a plant sale during the morning, and then the walk starts from the library at 2pm. On Wednesday, May 24, walkers meet at the library at 9.45am to walk to Wanshurst Green.
