Annual village meeting: All residents are invited to attend the annual village meeting which takes place at the village hall on Monday, May 22 at 7.30pm. This is an opportunit­y to raise any issues of concern you may have about the village and to cross question your borough and parish councillor­s and other officials. Local groups and clubs will also present short reports on their activities over the last year. Tea and coffee will be served from 7pm and a free light buffet supper will be provided in the interval. Tinnitus road show: Being staged by Hi Kent on Friday, May 19 from 2-4pm at Cafe Zest, 13-15 Brewer Stret (upstairs at The Life church). The group has been set up to allow people with tinnitus to meet together, share experience­s and access informatio­n. Attendance is free of charge. Bug hunt: On Saturday, May 20 from 10am-noon, join the Friends of Whatman Park on a bug hunt. Families will be equipped with sweep nets and sample pots to see what critters they can catch. Cake stall by the WI and a display by the History Group. Curry and quiz: On Saturday May 20, the primary school PTA is hosting a Curry and Quiz evening at 7.30pm in the memorial hall. Marden Society: Back in the Vestry Hall, on Wednesday, May 24 at 7.30pm, there will be a talk by Jeremy Hodgkinson on the Wealden Iron Industry. Signs of this once important industry are all over Kent in pub names, street names etc. Coupled with the wool trade, proximity to Europe made Kent the successful county it was. The day will be about finding out about wild orchids: life cycles, pollinatio­n techniques, mycorrhiza­l associatio­ns, distributi­on, rarity and protection, habitats and aids to identifica­tion. Sunday May 21, is The Building Stones of Kent. Discover the geological context and properties of Kent’s building stones during a morning classroom session. This will be followed after lunch by a walk around Maidstone to see them used in local buildings, led by Peter Golding, geologist. Most days start at about 10am and continue to around 3 or 4pm , depending on weather conditions and at the leader’s discretion. You will usually need to take a packed lunch and refreshmen­ts, though
