Chasing 255, they were looking good after overseas player Gerry Fatouros hit 84 off 99 balls.

James Hodgson (40) and James Marriott (39) kept them on track but the reply fell away and they were bowled out for 246.

Fordham said: “That’s twice in two weeks where we’ve lost a game we should have won.

“Gerry set it up with another good knock but we kept on losing wickets regularly.

“It was a poor chase from the middle and lower order because we were throwing wickets away when we only needed to score at five or six an over.

“We’ve panicked twice when we’ve been in a position to win.

“I think the guys lower down the order thought the game was in the bag and haven’t switched on to the fact that someone’s got to take responsibility and get us over the line.

“I keep saying we’re a good side and can bat all the way down but we need people to step up and be counted rather than letting the top four do the bulk of the work.”

The Mote go to Canterbury on Saturday and Fordham added: “We’ve lost two games and we need to bounce back and make sure it doesn’t become three.

“Every game is winnable. There’s no need to panic. It’s just a case of getting that first win.” In Division
