Angels boss demanded more from his players

Tonbridge

-

Steve McKimm admitted he had to tell his players a a few home truths at half-time during Tuesday’s goalless draw at Margate in the Bostik Premier.

The Tonbridge boss felt his side were second best during the opening 45 minutes on the new Hartsdown 3G pitch but said they improved significantly after the break.

McKimm said: “I’m pleased with the point because Margate’s a tough place to come to.

“The surface played well but we didn’t first half. Margate were far superior to us.

“I told the boys a few home truths, to be more confident, put themselves about a bit, be braver on the ball and close them down quicker. I thought we were the better side second half.”

The point at Margate followed Saturday’s 1- 0 home win over Hendon – Nathan Elder netting the 77th-minute winner – and McKimm said he’s happy with the start made by his side, particularly as he’s still missing several players.

He added: “Hendon was always going to be tough, the first game always is but as long as you get the points on the board early, you’re happy.

“Four from two I’m happy with that especially coming to a place like Margate and getting a result.”

The Angels return to Longmead on Saturday when they host new boys Brightlingsea, who have taken just a point from their opening two games.

However, McKimm he won’t be taking newly-promoted Essex lightly.

He said: “We had them watched on Saturday, they’re a big strong side who scored over 100 goals last year so they’re going to be a threat going forward.

“They’re solid at the back so we’ll do a training session on Thursday geared towards that.”
