A man has appeared in court charged with the attempted murder of a pensioner in Barming.

Heath Road was sealed off by officers after a man in his 70s was stabbed in the street on Monday evening.

John Lowe, 51, was arrested and also treated for minor injuries before later being taken to a police station.

Paramedics and police were called at around 7.20pm and a knife was seized from a location in Fant the same night. The police helicopter was also spotted hovering above the crime scene at around 10.30pm.

The victim was treated for injuries, not described as lifethreatening, at a hospital in London.

Heath road was shut for more than 16 hours while detectives carried out their investigation and it reopened at 12.30pm on Tuesday.

Martina Soleto, who lives nearby, said she saw police officers scouring for evidence on the pavement opposite Barming Heath on Monday night.

She said: “There were two police cars and an ambulance. I asked a police officer what had happened and they asked me to leave the area. They were looking on the ground with torches. I asked them if they were looking for anyone, and they said no.”

Lowe, of no fixed address, appeared via video link at Medway Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

He was remanded in custody and is due to appear at Maidstone Crown Court on November 1.
