A heroin addict who killed her son by feeding him methadone has been found dead in a Maidstone home.

Kelly Emery was jailed for six years after being convicted of the manslaughter of two-year-old Fenton Hogan, who died in 2013.

The court heard that she gave him the substance to make him sleep while she smoked crack cocaine, but the youngster never woke up.

Emery, 37, formerly of Birmingham, refused to give evidence during her trial at Nottingham Crown Court, insisting that she had never given her son methadone despite being negligent in leaving bottles of the drug lying around the house.

She was convicted by a jury and jailed in 2015, although she was cleared of giving Fenton the heroin substitute on two other occasions before his death.

But despite having served less than half her sentence, Emery was released from prison in September.

She was found dead at the home of her boyfriend, in Boxley Road, on Friday.

Police and paramedics were called at around 11.25pm but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers are investigating what happened, and are treating the death as unexplained.

Fenton’s paternal grandmother Lynn Wheeldon said she had been told it was a suspected overdose.

Speaking to The Sun newspaper, she said: “We’re feeling a bit weird about the whole thing but relieved because she killed my grandson so I’m not going to shed a tear.

“Fenton meant everything to my son, Michael, and she took him away.

“We’re experiencing mixed emotions.”

Ms Wheeldon, 54, from Dudley, had previously spoken of her disgust at the length of Emery’s sentence, and her early release.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Justice said that they were unable to comment on individual cases.
