A quote was accepted to cut back the laurel hedge at the eastern edge of the recreation field. The parish council resolved that the pavilion be refurbished rather than rebuilt. A questionnaire would be designed to go out to parishioners along with a map identifying the site of the new play area. A correspondent had written to the council regarding a crossing on the A274 by the entrance to the village hall and school cricket ground. Cllr Hotson had arranged a feasibility study. There would be an extraordinary meeting of the parish council on Tuesday, October 24 at 7pm with the next full council meeting on November 11. Village Friends wanted: With the various cutbacks from the government, the parish council is to receive £12,000 less this year from Tonbridge and Malling. This puts great strains on the parish council’s resources. Jobs that would normally be done in our village are not being carried out. Although there are already villagers volunteering, it would be great if more public spirited people could come forward to maintain our lovely village. We need a handful of volunteers who are prepared to give up a couple of hours a month to assist in, for example, cleaning the village signs, cutting back over-grown hedges, tending to the flower beds at the crossroads and litter picking. If you are interested in helping, ring Mike Williams on 01622 814529. Martin, to whom grateful thanks are given. Gates open at 6pm. Tickets are available £8.50 (booked) or £10 on the gate or a family ticket at £25 (not available on the gate) from westfarleighsportsclub.com or 01622 720810. Donations are requested for the popular tombola stall so, , give any to Jack Martin or via the sports club by November 1. Don’t forget to take your Guy for the bonfire and there will be prizes for the best. It would be a great help if you could walk or car share and no glass, alcohol, fireworks or sparklers are allowed on site. Charity quiz: A big thank you to supported the recent quiz night in aid of the RNLI. A total of £491 was raised, which is an all time record. Church services: On Sunday, October 22 at 10am, St Peter & St Paul’s church will be holding an All Age Service of about 45 minutes duration. Why not go along at 9.30am for breakfast first? At the Baptist Church, the service with junior church start at 10.30am. Karen Carpenter tribute: The Karen Carpenter Tribute Night, organised by the Yalding and District WI takes place on Tuesday, October 24 from 3-4pm at the village hall. To check for late availability of tickets, call 01622 813384. Mystery Machine: On Saturday October 21 from 8.30-11.30pm, Mystery Machine returns to The George for a night of music and fun. Parish council: The council will hold a special planning meeting on Tuesday, October 24 at 7.30pm, when the amended plans for the development of the glebeland on Vicarage Road will be on the agenda. Can we really cope with 65 new homes right in the centre of our already busy village? Three Choirs Concert: A large audience enjoyed a delightful concert in church last Friday evening. The Yalding junior choir, Village Voices and the St Peter and St Paul church choir provided great music and entertainment throughout, followed by delicious refreshments. The small children’s choir has some really young and very new members, but they sang beautifully. Well done to them, and indeed to all, plus a special mention for Daniel Sharman who put the whole concert together. Yalding School PTA: The AGM of

the PTA took place recently. Over the last academic year they had raised £10,000, which has provided much equipment for the benefit of pupils. Dee Ann Stead, who has been chairman for the last three years and who has now stood down, was thanked profusely for her enthusiasm and the tireless way she has worked so hard in the role. She will be much missed. Successful cricket season: The cricket club held its awards night at The Chequers, celebrating a good season for the club. After a lovely meal, many awards were presented to great applause and cheers. The player of the year award went to Sam Faulkner, 17 for his outstanding contribution to his team. Roy Farrier was awarded clubman of the year. He is the club groundsman and he has restored what used to be a lifeless pitch into a very acceptable one through his own efforts. Yalding Sensible Development: The new application by the developers for 65, rather than 75 new dwellings on the glebeland, is considered unreasonable by the Group for Sensible Development in the village. They met earlier this week to discuss the way forward, and really need as many people as possible to support their cause. Help to respond to the letter from the developer and to the letter from the borough council received by those who sent in objections to the first planning application is available, and every letter counts, so do write. The other thing for objectors, whether they have responded before or not, is to go along to support the cause of sensible development, to the parish council planning meeting in the village hall on Tuesday, October 25 at 7.30pm, when the matter will be on the agenda. (Note that only spokespersons will be allowed to speak, but bums on seats really count). Website: www. facebook.com/yaldingresidents or yaldingresidents@gmail.com
