Season-best return for duo

-

Matt MacLaurin and passenger Adrian Hope finished the British Sidecar Championship in 12th place.

The Maidstone duo were at Brands Hatch for the final two races of the season at the weekend.

They took fifth – their best result of the season – in the opening race having qualified ninth.

The pair made a good start to the second race but suffered gearbox problems on lap three before a puncture forced their retirement.

MacLaurin said: “I’m disappointed we couldn’t finish race two as I knew we had the pace to be in the top five again.

“We have still finished 12th in the championship even with missing two rounds.” Hope said: “We went well in race one. We were just again unlucky with having to finish on lap three in race two.

“Thanks to all our team and sponsors for the support they have given us this year.”

Maidstone racer Devon Modell ended the season in style over the weekend.

Modell, competing in the Blancpain GT Series in Zhejiang, China, came ninth and second in his Porsche 991 GT3R.

His efforts clinched sixth place overall in the GT3 Silver class, finishing with 118 points. Jelf Racing completed the Powerboat GP season on a high with success in all five classes. The Maidstone team were in action at the Rother Valley Grand Prix in Sheffield at the weekend. First up was the team’s youngest driver, George Elmore, in the GT15 class. He got down to business from pole position, putting in a commanding performance to take the heat win. He showed more of the same in heats two and three to win the grand prix title and clinch silver in the British Championship. Jonathan Brewer was next up in the GT30 class. His engine stalled midrace in the opening heat but he battled back for third place. He set a blistering pace to win heats two and three, taking the GP title and securing British silver. Nigel Edwards couldn’t get the better of the flawless Bill Owen in the T850 class but claimed silver. Ben Jelf won all three races in the F4 class, winning the grand prix and clinching second place in the British Championship behind Ben Morse. Team manager Colin Jelf overturned Paul Balfour’s one-point lead in the F2 class to win the British title on the final race of the season. Jelf won heat one but had it all to do after his gearbox broke in the second. That set up a winnertakes-all showdown, with Jelf emerging from the spray in front and building up a lead over Balfour who had the consolation of winning the grand prix. Colin Jelf said: “Words can’t express how proud I am of every member of the team this weekend. “We all knew exactly what we had to do and every one of the team gave their utmost to make sure we achieved what we set out to.”
