Kent Messenger Maidstone

What is going on with our motorways?

-

Once again our paper brings the news of the closures affecting motorway users.

The M20, Kent’s main artery, has already been severed by roadworks and the inevitable speed restrictions they bring.

Somehow motorists aren’t getting the message and accidents continue to only make problems on the motorway worse.

Then there’s the ongoing Teapot Lane footbridge debacle.

Once again Highways England has changed dates for the footbridge’s installation, as if closing four miles of motorway on Remembrance Sunday was ever a good idea.

The whole closure is exacerbated by shutting another junction, just to stop people driving the wrong way up an entry slip to avoid the closure.

Cutting off one’s nose springs to mind.

As if that wasn’t enough, the M26 will be shut overnight for a month.

And yet the reason behind the closure was kept from the public until last week.

Highways England will be prepping the 10-mile motorway to become a lorry park.

Don’t like the news? Too bad, there was no consultation and there probably won’t be.

This seems a far cry from the Brexit ideology of returning power to the people.

Instead Highways England started work under instruction from the government, originally listing its reason for a month of overnight closures as “central reservation” works.

No mention of a lorry park or Operation Stack, it could’ve been better described as ‘roadworks mean roadworks’.

Let’s see what happens when Britain leaves the EU on March 29, or maybe Highways England can change that date too.
