Chaos after eight-vehicle pile-up

Kent Messenger Maidstone - - NEWS -

Drivers and passengers involved in a dramatic eight- vehicle pile-up on the M20 on Tuesday night miraculously escaped without serious injuries.

The crash - which happened at around 4.50pm - caused severe delays on the motorway throughout the evening.

It blocked the coastbound carriageway for several hours between Junction 5 for Aylesford and Junction 7 for Maidstone and Detling Hill, where there were already roadworks.

It left traffic queuing back as far as the M26 interchange at Junction 3 and delays of up to 60 minutes.

Two lanes re-opened at around 6.50pm, but highways officials warned severe delays would remain on the carriageway, until the road finally fully reopened at around 7.45pm.

It emerged earlier this year that there were nearly 50 accidents in just one month on another stretch of the M20, near Ashford, which has been narrowed to two lanes to allow roadworks to take place.

Highways England faced calls to review its management of the works but bosses insisted none of the serious incidents were caused by the design of the traffic management road layout.
