Renovation works be-gin on new bar and distillery
Plans for a gin distillery and bar in the heart of Maidstone have been given the green light.
The new venture will be based in Market Buildings, in a unit dating back to 1835 which once housed the County Town’s corn exchange. More recently it was a hair salon.
The Maidstone Distillery is the brainchild of husband and wife team Darren and Sam Graves. The proposals were first put forward in January and have now been approved by councillors. While the new venue will require some alterations - including the modification of one of the arched windows for access - the couple are keeping period features including floor-to-ceiling windows, arches, and Tuscan columns.
The entrepreneurs aim to pay homage to the County Town’s gin-making heritage. By the late 18th century, Maidstone Hollands, distilled in Bank Street, had gained a global reputation for its quality and strength. Mr Graves, co-founder and father-of-three, said: “The local authority has been very helpful in advising us on our planned distillery, culminating in the wonderful news that we are granted permission.
“The distillery has gained a lot of local support and interest and we are delighted to be taking our plans forward. The Maidstone Distillery is helping re-establish a legacy of distilling in Kent and will celebrate the history of distilling at its new premises as well as its modern interpretation of craft spirit making.”
The new venue, set to open later this year, will produce artisan gin, vodka, liqueurs and eventually cask matured spirits such as whisky.
As well as the bar there will be experiences such as distillery tours and gin making on mini copper stills, as well as other yetto-be-announced unique events. There will also be a small shop. The refurbishment will take around 10 to 12 weeks and be completed in phases, starting with the distillery and experience room with the addition of a high-end bar at a later stage.
