Poor defence costs Bulls
AYLESFORD BULLS
Aylesford Bulls suffered a setback in London 3 South East on Saturday, losing 38-32 to rivals Vigo.
Despite a strong start, Bulls took their foot off the pedal in the second quarter and the home side galloped to an unassailable half-time lead of 31-17.
The flurry of four Vigo tries in 12 minutes coupled with a stern talking to gave the visitors the kick they needed to start playing rugby again.
Consequently the second 40 began much as the first had with Bulls on top and looking dangerous. Somehow the match became a contest again, forward dominance and wellworked phases allowing Bulls to clamber to within touching distance of the hosts.
It was, however, a case of too little, too late, and a buoyant Vigo managed to close the game out, strangling a last-ditch Aylesford assault on the try line. The result meant Vigo took five points, while Bulls grabbed two by staying within a converted try and scoring four tries. Scores came courtesy of Ben Ridout, Dion Comerford, Matt Stringer and Michael Jackson. Head coach Jay Jenkins said:
“Credit to Vigo for a strong performance. To the neutral observer I’m sure it was a cracking game to watch.
“I was very disappointed with our defence which ultimately cost us dearly.
“There were some good phases of play but ultimately we did not stick to script.
“We will now have two hard sessions this week in preparation for what’s bound to be a tough challenge against Bromley.”
Bulls are level on points with old rivals Bromley and welcome them to the Jack Williams Ground this Saturday.
TONBRIDGE JUDDIANS
Tonbridge Juddians’ perfect start in National 2 South is over after a 27-15 defeat by Henley on Saturday.
TJs had won all four previous encounters with the Oxfordshire club but a disappointing display at the Slade lacked their usual intensity. They remain top of the table, though, ahead of Taunton on points difference.
Tonbridge trailed 13-7 at halftime, their points coming from a Matt Walsh try, converted by Will Robinson.
There were signs of improvement at the start of the second half with TJs more competitive and gaining a better share of possession.
Robinson’s penalty closed the gap to three points and Hugo Watson later crossed in the corner for the hosts’ second try. But Henley remained in front, adding a converted try before being awarded a penalty try. TJs host Redruth this Saturday.
MAIDSTONE
Maidstone lost 54-5 at Old Alleynians on Saturday.
That made it five straight defeats for the county town club who remain without a point at the foot of London 2 South East. They host fellow strugglers Deal & Betteshanger this Saturday.
