Kent Messenger Maidstone

Support for Ukraine shows best of Brits

-

It is in times of great strife and turmoil that we tend to see people’s true colours.

When Russian troops began moving into Ukraine and explosions began to be reported last week, world leaders swiftly condemned the attacks and vowed to hold Vladimir Putin accountable. But rhetoric isn’t going to help those fleeing the country for their lives.

The people of neighbouring countries are giving what ever they can to those who need it, and even here in the UK we have been touched by these harrowing images.

It has been heartening to see then, that a conflict 1,500 miles away, has seen such a huge response from people on our own doorstep, who have leapt into action to try and help refugees displaced by the war. In Maidstone dozens of collections were set up within days of the heart-breaking scenes across Ukraine. Kind-hearted volunteers took it upon themselves to organise drops-offs or to donate blankets, sleeping bags, bedding, tents and whatever else our European friends needed.

In Coxheath, Holy Trinity Church opened for Ukrainian workers to pray for their loved ones stuck in the war-torn country.

And Kent nightclubs have gone out of their way to offer collection points for the Red Cross.

It’s amazing to see how people can band together without persuasion or question, wanting to help those who have been left helpless.

Ultimately actions speak louder than words, and the actions of people from around the globe send out a powerful message about our feelings towards those displaced by this unprovoked, unjust invasion.
