Late agony for Tonbridge

-

A last-gasp missed penalty denied Tonbridge Juddians as they lost 22-20 to Darlington Mowden Park in National League 1.

Tonbridge were able to make early inroads through strong carries up the middle and possession of the ball for long periods before an early penalty, slotted by Tom White, put them ahead.

Darlington hit back fast to score under the posts, but Judds used a dominant maul to great effect and driving from over 15m out Bobby Bratton found the line. The game opened up with half-time approaching and the hosts scored two quick tries, capitalising on Tonbridge mistakes, to take a nine-point lead into the break.

Such big blows have meant the end for TJs in other games this season, however this time the spirit was there to fight back.

A lovely break from White early in the second half allowed him to put Kyle McGhie through a hole for a crucial score, bringing the score to 17-15, and when Bratton went over for his second of the game with just 15 minutes left the match was poised beautifully.

However Darlington hit back to score their fourth try with just 10 minutes on the clock to take a two-point lead.

Both sides fought hard but Judds had the upper hand in the final few minutes. And with White off the field, Harvey Young stepped into the fly-half position and orchestrated a brilliant final attack which saw TJs advance from halfway up to the 22.

A penalty ensued but Young’s kick slipped just wide and with it the chance of a famous away victory.

Tonbridge have another long trip this weekend when they visit Plymouth Albion.
