Fuller eyes historic bout

Lenny Fuller is gearing up for a big title fight in his home town.

The Maidstone boxer (12-1) is set to top the bill at the Kent County Showground in Detling on Saturday, May 7.

All being well, he’ll be fighting for the vacant Southern Area welterweight title and is promising a night to remember.

“It’ll be the first time someone from Maidstone has fought for a professional title in Maidstone, so I feel like I’m making a little bit of history,” said Fuller, 27.

“I know some people might say it’s not much but to me it is. It feels like I’m part of something, it’s massive for the area.

“You’ve got boys like Sam Noakes putting Maidstone on the map, getting massive TV coverage, but for MTK to come and put on a show here, it’s brilliant.

“I think they’re looking at getting 2,500 to 3,000 people in there and I know I’m going to bring 1,000, easily.

“I’m pretty sure it’s going to be a title fight but, even if it isn’t, it’s still going to be an exciting fight and a cracking night out, with a lot of quality fights.

“I don’t think Maidstone has seen a show of this quality before, and I’m training so hard for it.

“Honestly, I’ve not missed a day. My schedule is unreal, the whole week is planned out and it has been since I started.

“Put the hard work in and you get the rewards.

“I’ve got trainers who put in as much work as I do and sponsors who back me, and if I don’t do things right, I’m letting them down.”

But his career stalled due to the pandemic and he was out of action for two years before a points victory over Petar Aleksandrov in February.

“I think I’d have already had the Southern Area if it wasn’t for the lockdowns,” reflected Fuller.

“My stock was high after Ultimate Boxxer, I had two wins after that and was lined up for all sorts before Covid, and you end up at the back of the queue.

“For the boys who rely on selling tickets, it wasn’t good at all. At some point I wondered if I was ever going to box again but I stayed strong and kept training.

“My dream is to fight for an English or British title at the Gallagher Stadium. We’d pack that place out.

“It would be unreal. The atmosphere in there would be stupid.”
