Homeless cuts are cruel and short-sighted

-

KCC has to make savings, so who are the first people it thinks of to cut services for? the county’s homeless.

Yes, let’s pick on the most vulnerable people, those least able to look after themselves and already at a crisis point.

Of course, the cynical might observe that these are also the people least likely to vote.

Unfortunately, this attitude from our power elites has become only too familiar. Whether it’s Boris partying while we were sat alone at home obeying the rules, or our multi-millionaire Chancellor with his Non-Dom status wife presiding over the largest inflation hike for decades, it seems the disconnect between those in power and the rest of us has never been greater.

The country is in crisis, with 9% inflation already, and another huge hike in energy prices in the wings. Even the Governor of the

Bank of England has talked of apocalyptic increases in the cost of living.

It seems very likely that more and more people will be on the streets than ever before. It would only take a small twist of fate and any one of us could find ourselves among them.

This is not the time to crunch down yet again on the most vulnerable.

Not only is it ethically wrong, it also makes no financial sense. Kent’s Homeless

Connect Service helps re-integrate homeless people into the community so they can eventually return to making an economic contribution to society.

Without help, they are likely to suffer increasingly poor physical and mental health ultimately costing the public purse far more - though perhaps KCC doesn’t care about that so long as it comes out of someone else’s budget.
