Couple buy hassle-free…with a little help
After years of saving and with a baby of their own, Lewis and Annie Williams have finally escaped the rental trap – but not without the ‘bank’ of mum and dad boosting their borrowing power.
The couple had been renting but wanted the security of owning their home once they were expecting their first child.
They moved to Redrow’s St Andrews Park development in Halling, near Snodland, earlier this year when son Albie was just four weeks old.
Annie works in paediatrics and Lewis is a teacher.
“We’d been saving for a number of years and both work in professions eligible for key worker schemes but it wasn’t something we wanted to do,” Annie explained.
“Expecting a baby was the catalyst as we always knew we wanted to get a foot on the property ladder but it quickened things up. Both of our families helped us in different ways and having that capital available with a ‘no risk’ return on it made a world of difference. It not only meant that we were able to buy sooner, but instead of putting down a 10% deposit we were able to pay 20%.”
The property the couple previously rented was a threestorey townhouse which they felt wouldn’t be practical with a baby and so they decided on a three-bedroom detached Warwick style Redrow home with a more manageable two floors.
“When we were renting we were paying £1,500 a month. Buying our own house has given us more space and enabled us to save £300 a month,” Lewis says.
“From seeing the website to putting down the deposit it was about four weeks. The online customisation with My Redrow was perfect. As well as things like the kitchen we chose all the flooring in advance as with a new baby we wanted to move in hassle free.”
Almost 90% of the properties at St Andrews Park have now been sold, but there’s still twobedroom apartments to fourbedroom homes available. A three-bedroom home similar to Annie and Lewis’s costs £399,995.
The show homes at St Andrews Park are open daily from 10am to 5.30pm. Alternatively, call 01634 780240 or visit www.redrow.co.uk/st-andrews
