sawilliams@thekmgroup.co.uk ASHFORD’S globetrotting teddy, Roving Richard, is hanging up his walking boots and packing his passport away as he recuperates from his most hectic year yet.

The adventurous bear has racked up an impressive 83,000 miles over the past year, escorting Ashford residents on day trips and holidays around the world.

The cuddly creature, who has just returned from an extended trip to New Zealand, is owned by Cllr Bob Davidson, the former Mayor of Ashford, and his wife Daphne.

Willesborough resident Cllr Davidson said: “Roving Richard has had a fantastic year travelling all over the world both with adults and children.”

As well as New Zealand, Roving Richard’s travels have taken him to Iceland, Barcelona, Canada, America, Mexico, the Caribbean, Poland, Germany, Paris, Barcelona, Holland, Malta and Ireland.

He was also thrilled to go to both the Olympic and the Paralympic Games in London with members of the 6th Ashford Beavers, who made him an honorary member.

He also accompanied Abbie’s Army members when they cycled 400 miles through France and Spain and he also took part in the Pilgrims Hospices Pyjama Walk.

During Cllr Davidson’s first stint as Ashford’s Mayor – in 2003/2004 – Roving Richard travelled a total of 76,000 miles during trips to Australia, America and Peru, where he married a bear made from Yak skin.

Unfortunately the long-distance relationship fizzled out and Roving Richard is now divorced.

He also climbed Mount Everest, the world’s highest mountain.

It is understood that Roving Richard, who has his own passport, did not claim any expenses for his trips abroad.

Cllr Davidson added: “Roving Richard has been well looked after by all who cared for him. He has had a brilliant year but now needs a long rest from the hectic lifestyle he has been leading.”

On Sunday (May 19) Roving Richard left Ashford with his compan- ion Lady Christine on his rocking horse to stay at her estate Glencairn, in Scotland.

Roving Richard added: “A big thank you to everyone for such an exciting year.”
