Blackman joins United
Lloyd Blackman is relishing a new challenge after being appointed assistant manager at Ashford United.
The 30-year-old former striker, who has just completed his Level 2 qualification, sees the move to Homelands as a perfect stepping-stone in his coaching career.
Hythe-born Blackman, who left his home-town club after two seasons as a member of Scott Porter’s coaching team, said: “Things petered out there and I then got a phone call from (Ashford boss) Paul Chambers. I jumped at the chance when it came and it gives me a real opportunity to progress.
“I’ve worked with Alan and Clive Walker and (ex-Gillingham player) Mike Trusson and they all gave me good and positive feedback. They also gave me hints and tips as I move towards my UEFA B badge. “The transition from player to coach has been a lot easier than I thought and I surprised myself how comfortable I feel in the role. I am still a novice but have learned a lot.” Blackman started as a youngster with Crystal Palace before making a handful of league appearances for Brentford until a hip injury ended his pro career.
He moved into non-league with Farnborough, Woking and Crawley, before moving back to Kent and spells at Maidstone United, Margate, Whitstable, Hythe and Chatham. Looking ahead to his new role at United, Blackman (pictured) said: “Going so close last year was a real positive and will stand the club in good stead to push on again.”
Meanwhile, United have been fined £25 by the Kent FA after pleading guilty to a charge of failing to control their players and supporters after a brawl marred the Kent Senior Trophy final at Tonbridge in April. Director Don Crosbie represented the club at the two-hour hearing last Thursday. Secretary Mary Hallybone said: “It was also made clear we have an exemplary record regarding conduct. As far as we are concerned, the matter is closed.”
