Cut-short game to be replayed

-

Ashford ladies will replay their East Women’s League, Division 2 South East home game against Thurrock next month after the match was abandoned with seven minutes left at Ball Lane on Saturday, following an injury to umpire Dominic Burrows.

The official hurt his back after falling and hitting a fence post during play and couldn’t continue but with both teams unable to agree on the outcome, the league have ruled on a re-match.

Ashford skipper Kim Cameron said: “Thurrock aren’t happy about it.

“They wanted to agree on a draw, which would have been a generous result for them, so we appealed to the league representative and they have ruled in our favour.”

The match will now be played on Saturday, December 20.

Cameron put Ashford in front before the Essex visitors equalised but the home side were pressing for a winner, when the game was cut short.

Chris Smith made one goal and scored the other as Ashford men came from behind to beat Kent/Sussex Regional 1 new-boys King’s & Alleyn’s 2-1 at Ball Lane on Saturday.

The visitors took the lead but Sam Handley put Ashford level, a quick passing move ending with him converting Smith’s ball into the middle, with the latter getting the second-half winner.

Ashford 2nds are jointtop of Kent Division 1 with Sutton Valence after a fourth successive win, 2-0 at Blackheath & Old Elthamians.

The victory came off the back of a good team performance with Kevin Miller named manof-the-match, after playing through the pain barrier.

Goalkeeper Rob Allan also played his part with several crucial saves to earn another clean-sheet.

The 3rds and 4ths were both beaten 2-0 and 4-1 by Gravesham and Old Bordenian respectively, with both short of key players on the day.

Andy Cummings, James Quick and Colin Hollands netted as the 6ths drew 3-3 at Canterbury Squires

Antiques lost 7-0 at a youthful Blackheath, despite some determined performances by defender Paul Dawson, with good support play by Matt Goodwin and Matt Anderson.

Alfie Miller scored both goals for Ashford under-16s who won 2-0 at Old Williamsonians on Sunday.

Henry Catt was named player-of-the-match, reward for a mature display by the youngster.
