Field of poppies to remember the fallen

-

Children from an Ashford primary school created their own Field of Poppies to mark the centenary of the start of the Great War. The clay poppies – similar to those at the Tower of London – were planted in the school field at Kingsnorth Church of England primary.

Pupils from Kingsnorth Primary school created their own Field of Poppies to mark the centenary of the start of the Great War.

Children of all ages had the homework task of researching someone who served in the First World War and each pupil dedicated their handmade poppy to their chosen person.

Key stage one youngsters made poppies from felt which were displayed in the entrance of the school on Armistice Day and pupils from key stage two made clay poppies which were used to make the Field of Poppies.

The poppies will be on display in the school field until the end of this month.

Sue Sullivan, deputy head teacher, said: “We thought it would be a great way to bring the history of remembrance alive for the children and make it relevant. They were all set homework to research either a relative who served in the First World War, someone from Kingsnorth who is remembered on the church memorial or someone from Ashford or a Kent hero. The children have all enjoyed this project.”

The school’s remembrance service was led by Year 6 pupils.
