We must have better access for disabled worshippers

A church is holding a consultation to decide how it can become more disability-friendly – with one option being to remove traditional wooden pews.

The Rev Richard King said it was early days for St Mary’s in Kennington but something needed to be done to improve access for visitors with mobility problems.

Mr King said: “We’re nowhere near a decision being made yet, we’re having a consultation to find out what people would like to do. The reason we’re exploring this is because St Mary’s Kennington doesn’t have easy access for disabled people.

“It doesn’t have level access coming into the building and there isn’t much room for wheelchairs.

“There have been occasions where we’ve had weddings and the bride or groom’s mother or father have been in wheelchairs and we’ve had problems getting them into the church.

“We need to think about how to create a place that’s flexible as well as making sure there’s room for people. But St Mary’s Kennington is beautiful and it must stay that way.”

Mr King said removing the pews and replacing them with temporary seating would be expensive and would require permission from a number of organisations, including the Diocese of Canterbury. Plans would need to be drawn up before any changes could be made, he said.

When pews were removed from St Mary’s Church in Ashford town centre two years ago, bellringer Chris Cooper was so upset he bought as many of them as he could afford and kept them in his living room. The seating was taken out to create space to use the building as an arts venue.

St Mary’s Kennington was built with just a nave and square chancel between 1100 and 1154 and has been extended several times.

In 1877, the incorporated Society for Buildings and Churches granted £25 towards re-seating and restoring the church.

A consultation document will be handed out at Sunday’s service but one can also be obtained by speaking to Mr King on 01233 623334.

A public meeting will be held at St Mary’s from 10am to 11.30am on Saturday, January 10, when feedback from the consultation will be discussed.
