Cod and whiting dominate

- By Alan Yates

Codling and whiting have dominated the recent shore results including the Dover three-day festival which was fished from Princes Parade at Seabrook and won by Folkestone angler Martyn Reid. The best cod was a 6lb fish for Tim Fagg, of Deal. The latest Dungeness Sea Anglers rover competition fished around Dungeness was won by Dave Wood-Brignall with 37 fish for 16lb 12oz. More than 200 fish were landed although no codling, just dabs, whiting and dogfish. Seabrook and Hythe are the venues to head for if you are after codling, although Dungeness is due to produce a big one any day now. Second was Mark Harvey with 14lb 6oz and third Paul Gunner with 12lb 4oz. Fourth was John Smith with 12lb 3oz and fifth Michael Smith with 9lb 14oz. At the Martin Walters Sea Angling Club late night match, fished at Seabrook, Folkestone’s Phil Tanner was the winner with 5lb 13oz. Second was Barry Uden with 5lb 5oz and third Rowan Lee with 3lb 10oz. The Fountain sea anglers’ event was won by Michael Warne, of Hythe, with 4.660kg including codling. Second was Ronnie Warne, of Hythe, with 3.770kg and third Kevin Bowles, also of Hythe, with 5.47kg. Fourth was Brian Collins, of Hythe, with 2.296 and fifth Herbie Tyler, of Folkestone, with 1.634kg. The first big cod catches of the winter season came to the Varne Boat Club during their cod competition which was supported by 23 small boats and fished out of their headquarters are Littlestone. The event raised £110 for the RNLI and was won by Jim and Mark fishing aboard their own boat, Seeker. They weighed in 42lb of cod. One of the most popular competitions fished from the Deal shoreline of the year is the Deal 1919 Angling Club’s Annual Christmas Festival. Known at the Thirty Turkey Hunt Open, it’s a big hit with anglers because everyone has a chance of winning a turkey. This year it’s on December 7 fishing, from 10am until 3pm. Competitors can chose where they fish, with zones on Deal pier, Walmer, Sandown and Deal castle. For more details, contact Pat Heath on 01304 361248. Freshwater results include the latest Cinque Ports AS event fished in the Royal Military Canal at the members-only section at West Hythe. It proved tough fishing with Jack Sullivan, of Folkestone, winning with 1.690kg of mainly small bream and roach on pinkie over ground bait. Second was Wesley Shrubsole, of Cheriton, with 1.240kg and third Les Foster, of Hythe, with 760g. In contrast, the strong wind stirred the fish at Radnor Park Lake and the latest icebreakers event was won by myself with 43lb, including roach, bream and an 8lb mirror carp on the pole. Second was Peter Williams, of Cheriton, with 17lb. Folkestone’s Richard Allen was third with 14lb.
