Vehicles targeted during series of arson attacks

- By Vicky Castle

Arsonists have carried out a string of menacing fire attacks on vehicles across the town over the last week.

Police have confirmed they are investigating a number of suspicious fires, after three vehicles were torched in just four days.

Fire crews first tackled a van on fire behind Hinges and Brackets in Whitfeld Road, South Ashford at around 3am last Friday.

A resident had dialled 999 when he saw the 12ft flames coming from the Vauxhaull Astra van and firefighters rushed to the scene.

They alerted police to the incident and officers later issued an appeal for witnesses or anyone with information to the “suspicious” incident to get in touch.

Just two days later, on Sunday, fire crews were called to the same road at 3.45am after reports a Rover 200 was alight.

Kent Police confirmed the second car fire was also suspicious and under investigation.

Later that day, a Jaguar X-Type was destroyed when it was set alight on a driveway in Kennington.

Firefighters from Ashford and Wye rushed to Raymond Fuller Way around 10.30pm, but were unable to save the car.

Again, the police confirmed they are treating the fire as arson and issued another appeal to anyone who might be able to help with their investigation.

Police spokeswoman Carly Wymark said: “Officers are investigating whether the incidents are linked.”

A Kent Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said all three vehicles were severely damaged by the fires.

He added: “As this is now a police investigation, we can’t offer anything further than the details about the incidents given earlier.”

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 01843 222289.
