Author Michael Morpurgo to perform haunting novel

-

The world-renowned author of War Horse is coming to Ashford.

Best-selling novelist Michael Morpurgo, along with actress Alison Reid, violinist Daniel Pioro and The Storyteller’s Ensemble will perform an enthralling show based on his haunting novel The Mozart Question.

Adapted and directed by Simon Reade, the show weaves together words and music to tell a dramatic tale of survival against the odds, set against the background of the Holocaust during the Second World War.

The show will be held at Ashford’s town centre venue, Revelation St Mary’s.

General manager Charlotte Burke said: “This is an astonishing story of courage and tenacity.

“The vibrant music which illustrates the story so well is both spine-tingling and enthralling in equal measure.

“Come to hear Michael Morpurgo and these astounding musicians weave their magic in the unique and intimate surroundings of Revelation St Mary’s.”

Michael Morpurgo’s novel The Mozart Question begins with the narrator, a young female journalist from London, reflecting on one of her first writing assignments, which she received by accident ... to interview the world’s greatest living violinist, Paolo Levi, at his home in Venice.

The narrator is warned by her editor to be sensitive to the reclusive and eccentric Levi and, above all, not to ask him “the Mozart question”.

Fortunately for her, she doesn’t even know what the Mozart question is. Instead, as she arrives in Venice and sits down with the shabbily elegant Levi in his apartment, she asks the first question that pops into her mind: “What made you pick up a violin and play that first time?”

The question, which gets at the heart of Levi’s entire history and his whole approach to making music, sends Levi off into an intensely personal recollection of his childhood, his tragic family history, and the violin that inspired him to make music in the first place.

The show on Sunday, June 28 is the only opportunity to see Mr Morpurgo perform in Kent this year.

Only a few tickets are left, which cost £14 for adults and £8 for children in advance or £16 and £10 on the door.

The show will start at 3pm, with doors opening at 2.30pm.
