Fulton: Waugh and Martyn made it look like a net session

-

In 1993 a fresh-faced David Fulton lined up for Kent against an Australian team at the tail end of their Test series against England, The Ashes series was well and truly over by this stage, with Australia taking a 4-0 lead into the sixth Test and 21-year-old Fulton had the chance to face an Aussie team full of big names. Recollecting the events of August 1993, Fulton said: “Watching Damien Martyn and Steve Waugh scoring hundreds was incredible – they made it look like a net session. “I got 40 not out in our innings in reply to them and it was great facing people like Shane Warne and Brendon Julian. “I remember Graham Cowdrey smashing Warne for six after he bowled a half-tracker. The next ball was on the same length and he tried again but it was the flipper and got him straight on the knee leg before. “Watching them up close and learning in that environment was pretty special, especially as it was only my second or third game in the first team.” When Australia visit St Lawrence on Thursday, June 25, it will be the first match of the tour. Fulton said: “I expect it will be a young side from Kent and the Australians don’t have a great deal of warm-up games, so they will definitely play a strong team. “As a young player, it’s exciting to put your skills to the test against the best. “You play second-team cricket and that’s fine but it’s really a stepping stone to be playing in this type of game. “It will be great for them to face some of the best bowlers in the world – people like Mitchell Starc and Mitchell Johnson will put them through their paces. “Steve Smith is a great example. Not so long ago he was playing in the Kent League for Sevenoaks Vine and it just shows where hard work and dedication can get you as he is now one of the best players in the world.”
