Enthusiasts united in their love of orchids

-

This week we introduce our new feature, My Club. Every week, we will share details about an Ashford borough-based team, club, charity or group, what they do and how to join. Our first club is the South East Orchid Society, which is introduced by chairman

Name: South East Orchid Society Number of members: We have about 70 members and expect to see around 35-40 turn up each month at meetings. Where and when do you meet? Meetings are held once a month (usually the last Sunday) from 2.30-5pm at the Ashford Rail Staff Club hall, in Beaver Road, Ashford. When was the club formed and why? The club has been meeting and awarding trophies since 1984. It was formed to enable orchid enthusiasts to meet, show their plants and learn more about orchids. What makes your club special? We offer an interesting programme of speakers each month and members are happy to share their knowledge. It costs £15 per year (£20 for couples), which includes refreshments and time to chat to others while viewing plants on display, before listening to the invited speaker. Why should people want to get involved with your group? Our club will interest people of any age group who have an interest in growing plants. No prior knowledge of orchids is necessary, just an interest in learning and in trying to grow your own. It is not necessary to own a greenhouse, as many orchids can be grown indoors. There is plenty of chance to buy orchids from visiting

nurseries/speakers. Do you have special events? Each year we hold a spring show in March and an autumn show in October where members display their best plants and trophies are awarded. This show is open to the public and is an excellent opportunity for anyone who is Are you looking for new members? We are looking for new members, particularly younger people to get involved in helping to run the club. Anyone interested in joining can come along to a meeting or contact a committee member.
